Man arrested over caravan theft

A 49-year-old man from Ikawai, near Waimate, was arrested on Sunday in connection with the theft of a caravan worth about $50,000 after it was reported stolen from Fisherman's Bend Reserve, at Lake Waitaki, on Friday afternoon.

Sergeant Tony Woodbridge, of Oamaru, said the caravan was recovered from an empty section in Glenavy, north of Oamaru, after the man allegedly tried to alter its appearance.

Sgt Woodbridge said police were helped by social media posts related to the theft and footage from Oamaru's CCTV cameras.

The man is due to appear in the Dunedin District Court this week.
