Medical relief team to speak on Haiti project

The medical team which worked in Haiti as part of an emergency relief initiative, Project HHH, will attend a public meeting in Oamaru on Sunday.

The team included surgeon Ross Pettigrew, orthopaedic surgeon Jean Claude Theis, anaesthetist the Rev Steve Benford and physiotherapists Dale Radford, Kimberly Laurie and Fiona Millard.

Only Mr Benford will be missing from the meeting, which will be held at Waitaki Boys' High School at 2.30pm, although he will speak via a video link.

The team was in Haiti in May and June, at St Justinien's Hospital in the city of Cap Haitien.

Robyn Couper, who worked as a missionary in Haiti for 33 years and recently returned to Oamaru after a further three months there, and former Waitaki mayor Alan McLay, who spent about 10 days with Miss Couper, will report on their trips.

Details about the next medical team heading to Haiti would be announced, with details about a special relationship between Oamaru and Cap Haitien, Hearts and Hands for Haiti trustee Bruce Albiston said.

Mr McLay will also propose a special project enabling Project HHH to continue beyond short-term medical relief.

University of Otago personnel were setting up a distance teaching unit so orthopaedic surgeons in Haiti could go online for further teaching from Dunedin.
