Motorcycle, car collide

A 55-year-old motorcyclist suffered a compound leg fracture after colliding with a car attempting to complete a U-turn in front of him in Oamaru on Sunday.

About 4.30pm on Sunday, the Alexandra motorcyclist was travelling south on Wansbeck St in Oamaru behind another motorcyclist and a car.

Acting Sergeant Carl Pedersen, of Oamaru, said the 30-year-old driver of the car, also travelling south, had intended to turn into Solway St, but missed the turn.

Waiting for traffic to pass to attempt a U-turn to get back to Solway St, the male driver, from Ashburton, waited for one motorbike to pass, but failed to see the second and drove into the path of the 55-year-old motorcyclist.

The rider was knocked from his bike, suffering a compound fracture after the bike came down on his leg.

''As a result, he was transported to Dunedin Hospital [with a leg fracture], likely to undergo surgery,'' Sgt Pedersen said.

The 30-year-old Ashburton man has been charged with careless driving causing injury.
