In contrast, about 600 people watched the event, more than last year, staying until the open round at 3pm when 11 entries from each of the classes competed.

Many spectators could not believe how steep the vehicles could climb, and saw some roll-overs, but no-one was injured.

For the Richardsons from Mataura, the event was a family affair with Tony, Keith and Daniel each entering vehicles.

Tony Richardson, with navigator Tracey Clearwater, won the super modified and then the open classes.

Results were (driver's name first). -Standard class: Andy McArthur (Timaru) and James Dunckley (Mayfield) 1, Dan Borlase (Oamaru) and Alex Borlase (Pareora) 2.

Modified: Barry Wells (Temuka) and Ash Buchan (Timaru) 1, Joshua Lee and Tyler Martin (Oamaru) 2.

Super modified: Tony Richardson and Tracy Clearwater (Mataura) 1, Callum Bond and Clint Jeffery (Dunedin) 2, Mike McCarthy and T Hayes (Dunedin) 3.

Open: Richardson and Clearwater 1, Trent and Richard Dennis (Gore) 2, McCarthy and Hayes 3.
