Bookworms will be able to burrow into the Oamaru Library on Monday for the first time since it closed on February 16.

The library is on target to complete the final stage of a $269,500 upgrade, the first major project since it was opened in September 1975.

Library manager Lorraine Weston-Webb said the library would be ready by Monday, with an official opening planned after Easter, to give it a chance to settle down.

Library users will notice major changes, even apart from the new shelving, furnishings and paint.

The layout of the library has been changed, the most obvious being shifting the children's area to the front, combining all non-fiction into one section instead of two and changing the location of some sections.

Library staff will have to familiarise themselves with the new layout and Mrs Weston-Webb encouraged people to ‘‘visit and ask''.

Yesterday, shelving was being installed and staff would start re-stocking the library tomorrow and Saturday, with Sunday available if needed.

Mrs Weston-Webb was adamant the target of opening Monday would be met.

The official opening planned for March 27 will feature authors Gavin McLean, originally of Oamaru and now of Christchurch, and Fiona Farrell, a fiction author of Oamaru.

Reference librarian Jill Grenfell, who has been a librarian for 47 years and worked in the library since it opened in 1975, will also speak on the library's history.

A children's party will be held on Saturday, March 29 to introduce young members to the new children's section.

It will feature Kyle Mewburn, author of children's books including Kiss Kiss Yuck! Yuck!, and the double decker bus decorated as a magic story bus outside the library.
