Mr Roundhill (47), who was previously principal of Oceanview Heights School in Timaru, started work this term, replacing Ross Willcocks, who finished in April.
He said Oamaru North School always had a good name, and the shift meant a return to Otago.
Mr Roundhill, who was born in Dunedin, said he enjoyed the southern part of the South Island.
Mr Roundhill's teaching career spans 24 years.
He has also been principal at East Gore and Greenhills schools and he was principal at Oceanview Heights for three and a-half years.
