Oamaru man over limit twice in two hours

An Oamaru man's need for a nicotine fix could end up costing him a lot more than just the cost of a pack of cigarettes, after he was stopped for drink-driving twice within two hours.

Sergeant Blair Wilkinson said the 28-year-old man was stopped first for speeding on Turn St at 9.30pm on Sunday.

He was then processed for drink-driving after he failed a breath test, in which he recorded a reading of 612mcg - 212mcg over the legal adult limit of 400mcg.

However, it was not long before the man was again in trouble with police for the same offence, Sgt Wilkinson said.

"He was forbidden to drive for 12 hours, but was stopped again about an hour and a-half later driving a different vehicle on King's Highway.

"He was again processed for drink-driving, and that time blew 459mcg, and also for driving while forbidden."

Sgt Wilkinson said the man told police he was on his way for a packet of cigarettes on the second occasion.

He will appear in court on two charges of drink-driving and one charge of driving while forbidden on June 6.
