Obey signs, drivers told

Police are calling for drivers to obey stop signs in Oamaru, after a crash at the intersection of Wharfe and Wansbeck Sts on Sunday night.

The 25-year-old driver of a southbound vehicle failed to stop at the stop sign and crashed into an eastbound vehicle on Wansbeck St at 10pm on Sunday.

No injuries resulted, but the 25-year-old Oamaru man was issued an infringement notice - a $150 fine and 20 demerit points - for failing to stop at a stop sign.

Acting Sergeant Carl Pedersen said police had attended several accidents at that intersection over the years.

He said stop signs required drivers to come to a ''total, 100% stop'' and not just slow down or drive through if they believed the way was clear.

''A few of the intersections up there [Wansbeck St] have changed from give way to stop,'' he said.

''The reason that's been done is because they are crash and high-risk areas and people still seem to be a bit blase about stopping completely.''

Other intersections where motorists were often caught failing to stop, were Test and Wharfe Sts and Eden and Reed Sts, Sgt Pedersen said.

Waitaki District Council roading manager Michael Voss said the Wansbeck St intersections were changed from give way to stop about June last year.

''As part of this change we also moved the limit lines forward to be in line with the kerbs. They were previously set back, which hindered visibility,'' Mr Voss said.

The council also conducted a survey of the traffic behaviour at the intersection of Eden and Reed streets recently to gain a better understanding of traffic movements after 3pm, when schools are released.

''There were a number of rolling stops but I was pleased at the high level of compliance - and the lack of banking up that was reported to us as being a problem,'' he said.

Cyclists, skateboarders, pedestrians and one mobility scooter also safely negotiated the intersection, he said.
