'Oklahoma' to test Opera House

The Oamaru Operatic Society will stage the musical Oklahoma in November as part of a "shakedown period" for the restored and refurbished Opera House.

While the Opera House will not open until February, using the skills of the operatic society to thoroughly test the building, was a "fantastic opportunity" to evaluate the venue and its systems before the opening, Opera House director Richard McWha said.

Society spokesman Terry Kent was thrilled the society had been invited to "break in" the theatre and was not fazed by the challenges of new technology in what was essentially a new theatre backstage.

The society would provide valuable feedback on issues needing to be resolved before the February opening festival, Mr Kent said.

Mr McWha said it was an ideal "sneak preview" for the public to see what the Opera House would look like in February, but stressed the venue would not be finished or completely open in November.

The events that would be held in the November to February shakedown period were designed to test, find faults and identify issues before the opening.
