Opera House drops its inhibitions

The scaffolding covering the Oamaru Opera House is coming down after almost six months, revealing the results of the Waitaki District Council's $9.7 million redevelopment of the 101-year-old building.

The facade has been restored, including decorative stonework at the top.

Window surrounds have yet to be painted, but that will be done using a cherry-picker, which will be cheaper than keeping the scaffolding in place.

Bramwell Scaffolding expects to have all the scaffolding down by tomorrow when virtually all of the facade's restoration will be visible.

The Opera House is being restored and redeveloped as a cultural and arts centre.

It will have its first "shake down" performance in November when the Oamaru Operatic Society stages Oklahoma.

The official opening of the redeveloped building will take place in February, with a week-long festival.
