A 6m organ pipe was carefully winched into place at St Patricks Basilica in Oamaru yesterday.

It was the longest of more than 900 pipes which are part of a Hobday organ being installed in the basilica.

The organ, with its original pipes dating back to 1899 was previously located at St Matthews Anglican Church in Masterton.

It is being restored by Oamaru-based organ restorer Dr Ron Newton, who has been cleaning, repairing and overhauling it between other work commitments
