The Waitaki District Council has advertised the proposal and called for public submissions, which close on Friday, after the school proposed closing the street between Thames and Reed Sts.
The council will make a decision on August 23.
The proposal has attracted views for and against, and a petition has circulated in the Derwent St-Reservoir Rd areas calling for it to stay open. Ouse St is the main route to residential areas west of Oamaru.
Waitaki Mayor Alex Familton said yesterday a public meeting would be held in the Opera House on Monday at 6pm.
The school proposal, along with a plan of landscaping and limited road access to parking, would be presented at the meeting. People would be able to comment and would be encouraged to make a submission.
Proposals to close Ouse St date back to 1974.
In 2002, Waitaki Girls' senior pupils put a plan to the council but it was rejected.
The latest proposal came when the council ripped up the road to replace water mains and wastewater drains.
Closing the street was aimed at improving safety for pedestrians and to enhance the area.
The plan was to turn the street into a cul-de-sac with access from Reed St, two-thirds for parking and Waitaki Girls' school access. The remaining third, at the Thames St end, would include landscaping, courtyard and pedestrian precinct.
