Two people face a variety of charges after they were arrested in Oamaru on Tuesday night.
A 38-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy were caught by police after allegedly stealing two cars and apparently attempting to break into at least three more around Oamaru, police said yesterday.
Sergeant Blair Wilkinson said the older male appeared in Oamaru court yesterday charged with two counts of unlawfully taking a vehicle, three counts of unlawfully interfering with a vehicle, drink-driving, driving while disqualified and careless driving.
The 16-year-old would also face several charges in Youth Court, he said.
Sgt Wilkinson said the pair were apprehended about midnight after they allegedly took a ute from Severn St. They were disturbed by the owner.
Subsequent inquiries revealed further incidents, Sgt Wilkinson said.
"They also took a car from Burn St and crashed into a parked car on Thames St. They abandoned the car on Severn St and attempted to take a number of other vehicles before getting the ute started. The owner saw them and apprehended them when the vehicle stalled.
"They then took off and were apprehended by police," Sgt Wilkinson said.
