'Piggy-back' plan in place

Despite a lower-than-anticipated rates rise in the coming year, the Waitaki District Council will consult the community on its 2018-19 annual plan.

Council policy and strategy manager Mike Searle said the consultation would be part of two consultation processes already under way.

''We're just going to piggy-back on the district plan consultation and also the Oamaru Harbour master plan consultation,'' he said.

''What'll come out of that is some annual plan items.''

After signalling a 4.13% increase in the rates take in the coming year in its 2018-28 long-term plan approved last year, a 3% rates rise, or less, was now on the cards.

District plan review consultation often produced feedback on issues more suited to an annual plan.

That consultation had already taken place in the Waitaki Valley and that process had already generated some feedback more suited to an annual plan consultation than a district plan review.

The information from the consultations already planned would be distilled by council staff and presented to councillors at a workshop in May.

The annual plan was expected to be adopted by the council on June 25.
