A local hero was celebrated this week as part of Road Safety Week.

Waitaki District Council community educator and engagement officer said Pembroke School learning support teacher Heather Murray was "a great ambassador and a road safety hero, having helped the kids cross at the Thames Highway pedestrian crossing for about 25 years".

Oamaru’s school community officer Constable Jay Morriss said Mrs Murray was a dedicated volunteer helping to keep pedestrians and other road users safe.

"She’s done it for decades. She is out there regardless of the weather, within term time, looking out for students crossing the road.

"On behalf of Oamaru police we thank her for her tireless efforts to help keep our community safe," Const Morriss said.

Pembroke School principal Brent Godfrey said Mrs Murray was "amazing".

Mr Godfrey along with Pembroke School year 5 pupils Eva Curry and Connor Regusson, both 9, Ms Hamilton and Const Morriss presented Mrs Murray with flowers as a road safety hero, this year’s theme for the national campaign.

Eva and Connor said they saw Mrs Murray most mornings helping them and other schoolchildren cross the street safely.
