Rumours of hospital kitchen closure

Waitaki District Health Services chairman Chris Swann has quashed speculation the kitchen at Oamaru Hospital will close.

However, Mr Swann did confirm that while a "review" is ongoing no decision had been made on how it would operate in the future, or if food preparation would be outsourced.

He described it as a wider review of the "provision of the services" at the hospital.

The kitchen area, which employed about eight staff, was also part of a second review that is focusing on the layout of the hospital.

Mr Swann said it was important patients were provided with nutritious food of a quality standard, regardless of where it was prepared.

While he had not eaten food cooked at the hospital himself, feedback from patients about the quality of the food served at the hospital had been collated and was generally positive. A consultation process, which will close on Tuesday, was under way with hospital staff as part of the review, which also involved union representatives.

Mr Swann said a decision would be made once that information had been reviewed.
