Russians to perform in South

A Russian folklore group will perform in South Canterbury and North Otago this month.

The Gost'ya (Welcome Stranger) Folklore Group's first visit to the southern hemisphere has been organised by Russian company Nutritek - which has invested in a dairy plant at Studholme - to share the Russian culture with the community.

The group, which was established in 1991, hailed from Vologda, a region of Russia well-known for its agricultural products, particularly dairy.

Renowned for the beauty of its costumes, the group has a repertoire combining traditional folk songs, dance and games.

It received recognition in Russia this year, being given the title of State Cultural Institution.

The group will perform at Lister Home in Waimate and Iona Home in Oamaru on July 15, with a community show at the Regent Theatre in Waimate on July 16.
