Seasider run to Oamaru planned next month

The Seasider tourist train, which runs between Dunedin and Palmerston during summer, will operate a trial service to Oamaru on Palmerston A and P Show day, Saturday, February 7.

The train will travel from Dunedin to Palmerston, bringing people north to the show, and then will continue on to Oamaru. The extension of the train service was an experiment, Taieri Gorge Railway operations manager Grant Craig said.

If the trial service was supported by Oamaru businesses and tourist operators, there could be further Seasider trips to Oamaru next season, he said.

Passengers going to the Palmerston show will have more than four hours there before the return trip.

The train will leave Dunedin at the usual 9.30am departure time on February 7, reaching Palmerston at 11.05am and Oamaru at 12.30pm.

The return trip will leave Oamaru at 2.45pm and Palmerston at 4pm, arriving in Dunedin at 5.30pm.

The show organisers will provide free bus transport between the Palmerston railway station and the showgrounds The Taieri Gorge Railway has run a train from Dunedin for Oamaru's Victorian Heritage Fete in November for the last few years.

The Seasider will run twice weekly from Dunedin to Palmerston return (Wednesdays and Saturdays) on most weeks during summer.
