They may have cost only $14, but Kyla Thomas' new stilettos helped her win $1000 in the Mother's Day ‘‘Stilettos on Thames'' 100m sprint in Oamaru yesterday.

Twelve women lined up for the race wearing shoes that had to have heels at least 5cm high. No platform heels were allowed.

Ms Thomas, who travelled 45 minutes from Kurow to compete, was a clear winner and won a $1000 shopping spree. Jan Warrington (Kakanui) was second and received a $250 shopping voucher, with Olivia Bungard (Weston) third.

The winner, who was finding it difficult to talk after the race, put her victory down to the cheap stilettos she bought in Dunedin on Thursday.

‘‘I bought them specially for the race. I thought $14 wasn't too much if I broke them,'' she said.
The shoes survived.

The event was marred by a false start, ‘‘Devil Woman'' Carolyn van Zyl living up to her name by breaking and completing the 100m dash before anyone else left the line.

‘‘I thought I heard them shout ‘Go' and I showed them how to do it in style. There'll be an inquiry and I'll probably get disqualified, but I can still fairly say I crossed the line first,'' she said.

Kakanui's Jo Perkins had everything a super mum needed pinned to her costume, ranging from aspirin to toilet paper, a coffee sachet, wine glass (‘‘to celebrate my win'') and a ‘‘domestic goddess'' crown.

She carried a baseball bat: ‘‘With four daughters, I need that to fight off the teenage boys.''
