Stolen Bluebird tracked down on West Coast

Two young people who allegedly led police on a high-speed chase in a stolen car while already facing charges over another crime spree were arrested in Kumara on Wednesday night.

An 18-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man were arrested by Hokitika police after officers found a white Nissan Bluebird, which had been stolen from Oamaru, at a Kumara address about 5.30pm on Wednesday.

Constable Neil Gillespie, of Hokitika, said the pair were charged with unlawfully getting into a vehicle, but inquiries were continuing.

Further charges were likely, he said.

They are believed to be two of the six people, aged between 17 and 20, arrested near Waianakarua on Monday night after allegedly stealing a Lexus car from Christchurch and which was also linked to a petrol ''drive-off''.

On Tuesday, all six were given registrar's adjournments to appear in the Christchurch and Greymouth District Courts tomorrow.

Just hours after being remanded on bail in Dunedin, two members of the group are alleged to have stolen the Nissan Bluebird from Oamaru and were involved in a police pursuit north of Glenavy. The pursuit was abandoned in the Morven area after speeds of more than 150kmh were reached, police said.

Police inquiries located the Nissan Bluebird in Kumara. It would be forensically examined and returned to its Oamaru owner, Const Gillespie said.
