Drama and poetry have been key themes at Waitaki Girls’ High School recently, with students marking National Poetry Day just before taking the stage for the school’s annual interhouse drama and dance competition.

With titles of Til Death Do Us Part, The Masked-Up Murderer, Clued Up and Meow-der Murder the "Whodunit" theme for Theatrix, Waitaki Girls’ High Schools’ annual interhouse drama and dance competition, gave the script writers a wide scope to creatively interpret the theme.

A fully student-driven evening of entertainment meant that script writing, directing and choreography was led by senior students.

Drama judge, Robyn Keno, had a difficult task adjudicating the twenty-minute dramas while Tannah Adam judged the dance.

The dance is an open section with any style of dance able to be used.

"This year saw a major increase in the number of students wanting to participate with larger casts and dance crews than in previous years," Girls’ High director of arts Sherilyn Hellier said.

"As always, some hidden talent emerges, when disguised in costume and makeup, girls are able to really let themselves get into character and show their acting skills.

"It was Wilson House’s night in the end winning best direction, best choreography and the Kirkness Shield for overall points. But Gibson House won the trophy for best script and Molly O’Sullivan, Ferguson House, was named best actress."

Theatrix is the last major cultural event on the school calendar before many of the seniors head off to Tournament Week then buckle down to sit the Derived Grade Exams.

Prior to the event, two groups from the year 13 English class wrote poems about their favourite places, and then wrote them out in chalk outside the school to mark National Poetry Day.

National Poetry day was on Friday, August 22 but the girls wrote the poems in chalk outside the school on Thursday to fit in with their lessons.

"It’s just a bit of fun, but of course, it’s for national poetry day, and Janet Frame was a student here," Girls’ High English teacher Lynda Scott Araya said.
