Dermatologist shortage bites

Waitaki residents suffering from skin conditions are struggling to get in-person appointments to see dermatologists, as a national shortage bites.

Patients have recently been referred by GPs to private clinics in Christchurch.

However, they are now full and not taking new patients, leaving the only other option a referral to a dermatology practice via email.

Health New Zealand said it was aware of the situation but its plans to boost dermatologist numbers in Waitaki would not happen for another nine months.

"There have been some significant challenges securing dermatologists right across New Zealand, and particularly in the South Island," Health New Zealand acting executive regional director for Te Waipounamu Phil Wheble said.
