Work is about to start on surveying the site of the closed pedestrian railway crossing at the Oamaru Public Gardens.
A Waitaki District Council spokeswoman said a meeting yesterday between KiwiRail and the council about the temporary closure of the crossing was positive.
The crossing in Isis St closed on Wednesday last week after a KiwiRail audit of the site.
The crossing was expected to be closed for months until it was brought up to national safety standards.
Council network operations engineer Mark Renalson said last week the council knew which specifications the site needed, it was just a matter of how to apply them.
The spokeswoman said that after the survey was conducted, a plan would be formed about how best to fix the situation and money sought to cover any costs for the work.
KiwiRail said in an emailed statement the crossing would remain closed until the upgrade was completed.
