Herbert Martin (obscured, left), Leigh Martin, Lydia Martin (19 months) and Marise Martin pull up a table and celebrate the closure of Harbour St with about 40 Victorians in the Precinct, Artisans & Eccentrics in Oamaru on Saturday.

The pop-up lunch, celebrating Harbour St’s trial car-free weekends was the first event the group — "a culture- and heritage-based, humour-infested social network" — held.

The informal group was launched last week by Oamaru artist Donna Demente and is based at her Harbour St Grainstore Gallery.

The Waitaki District Council approved a weekend 10am to 4pm pedestrianisation trial period for the Victorian street last week.

Having lunch on the road is all very cute, but what was the effect of the closure on the businesses?

Have you ever tried to get a big vehicle down Tyne? It's alright until you turn right at the narrow. I suppose only an Oamaru business can answer your question. Generally, more people and fewer vehicles in a town space enhance retail opportunities.
