The Oamaru ward councillor was installed in the role at the brief inaugural meeting of the 11th Waitaki District Council at the Oamaru Opera House last night, which followed the traditional declaration ceremony.
Waitaki's first Pasifika councillor, Hana Halalele, signed the declaration document, as did Jeremy Holding, Jim Hopkins, Kelli Milmine, Colin Wollstein (Oamaru ward), Bill Kingan and Guy Percival (Corriedale) and new face Peter Newton (Waihemo).
Ahuriri ward councillor-elect Ross McRobie was unable to attend the ceremony and will be sworn in at the first full meeting of the council on Wednesday.
Addressing the council table and the about 80 people who attended the ceremony, Mr Kircher praised those elected.
