Views wanted on roading proposals

Waitaki District Council ratepayers are being asked for their views on three proposed roading policy changes which could have a major impact on the rates they pay in the future.

Consultation on roading levels of service within the district started in late May and include future public meetings to outline what these are.

Some of the policies date back to 1990 and have had to be reviewed because of changes in traffic and use of roads - for example, an increase in dairying with more milk tankers.

The three reviews cover the roading network hierarchy (which roads are designated as strategic, arterial, collector or local), carriageway width standards (how wide roads should be) and seal extensions.

For example, changes to carriageway width standards could add up to $418,000 a year to the council's roading budget, some of which would be offset by Land Transport NZ subsidies.

During the public consultation period, public meetings will be held to discuss the future direction of roading standards.

These meetings, all at 7pm, are at the Papakaio Community Centre on June 12, the Otematata Lakes Centre on June 17 and the Oamaru, Kingsgate Brydone Hotel on June 24.

In addition, the public are invited to attend presentations on roading levels of service.

One was given at the Ahuriri Community Board meeting on Tuesday and another will be presented at the Waihemo Community Board meeting on Monday at 7pm.

The council has prepared a information and a summary of changes proposed.

Submissions will close on June 30 at 5pm and hearings will be held on July 8.
