Voters urged to enrol for Waihemo by-election

Eligible voters in the Waihemo Community Board area are urged to enrol now or check their enrolment details, for a by-election to be held on February 10.

Eligible voters needed to enrol or update their enrolment details by December 22 to vote in the by-election by postal ballot, the registrar of electors for the Waitaki electorate, Carol Johnston, said yesterday.

The by-election has to be held because only four nominations were received for the five seats on the community board in last month's local body elections.

It could cost up to $12,000 if more than one nomination is received and an election needs to be held.

Only those people who are correctly enrolled will receive voting papers in the mail and be able to have a say in the election.

Enrolling is quick and easy through a toll-free line (0800 36 76 56), by freetexting your name and address to 3676, at any PostShop or by requesting or downloading a form from the elections website (www.elections.org.nz).

People can update their details by filling in a new enrolment form, going online or filling in a change of address form at any PostShop.

Enrolling to vote in parliamentary elections automatically enrols those people living in the Waihemo Community Board area for the by-election.

People can check their enrolment details on the electoral roll at any PostShop, courthouse or public library.
