Wajax event

The Wajax rural firefighting competition will return to where it all began tomorrow, as teams from Otago and Southland converge on Omarama to battle for firefighting supremacy.

The 41st annual event, which began in Omarama in 1971 and is the biggest and longest-running volunteer firefighting competition in New Zealand, will see up to 25 teams compete in four timed events involving rural firefighting equipment.

Up to 300 people are expected at the event, named after the Wajax portable pump.
