The coastline at Kakanui will be reassessed after huge waves pounded the Otago coast this week.

Last year, the sea undercut limestone below Beach Rd, north of Kakanui, and great chunks of rock fell into the sea on two different occasions.

In the first incident, in May, the slip was exacerbated by heavy rain and sodden soil on top of the rock.

That section of road remains reduced to a single lane.

Waitaki District Council roading manager Michael Voss said there were no reports of further damage yesterday, after big waves crashed into the North Otago coast.

A contractor had been regularly monitoring the area, he said.

When the big swells eased, a more detailed inspection would be carried out.

''We'll be looking at it when we get low tides coming up ... when it's safer to get down there.''
