WDC to hire events planner

The Waitaki District Council is hiring an events co-ordinator after councillors established a budget to run the community’s "key events".

The new position was contingent on the $35,000 budget for New Year’s celebrations, the annual Friendly Bay Family Fun Day and a new "Whitestone Vines/Chamber Music event", a council spokeswoman said.

Council people and culture group manager Lisa Baillie’s report to council this month said it was "becoming more and more difficult to find enough volunteers to manage and run a number of smaller, locally important events".

Oamaru  lacked an organised New Year’s Eve celebration for several years, but Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher and deputy mayor Melanie Tavendale organised an event to ring in 2018.

The council has organised February’s Friendly Bay Family Fun Day. Mrs Baillie’s report provided little detail on the new chamber music event, but said it would be held in Waitaki vineyards.

In May, Mrs Baillie said the council employed 132.7 FTE (full time equivalents); by the end of the financial year it was 139 FTE.
