Yachting classic marks 20th year

New Zealand's largest freshwater yacht race can celebrate its 20th running in style this year, secure in the knowledge it has retained its major sponsor.

Meridian Energy Ltd this week announced it would sponsor the Aviemore Classic, held at Labour weekend on Lake Aviemore, for another three years.

This year's event is expected to be as popular as ever, with about 90 boats taking part in the two-day regatta.

Race organiser Ivan Stevenson of the Timaru Yacht and Power Boating Club said the Aviemore Classic was "a great opportunity for locals and yachtsmen from around the South Island to enjoy a great weekend of fun and racing".

Two days of trailer-sailing racing catered for a wide range of yachting ability.

"It really does have something for everyone. Every year, the whole community comes out in force to support the country's biggest and best freshwater sailing regatta.

"We are truly grateful for the months of planning from the community and financial support of our sponsors," Mr Stevenson said.

Meridian sponsorship manager Mel Seyfort said the company had a long association with the Aviemore Classic.

"Many of our staff and facilities are based in the Waitaki Valley, so we . . . are keen to support community-led events," she said.

Mr Stevenson said this year's event would have a special trophy for the winner of the 20th Meridian Aviemore Classic.
