North Otago Budget Advisory Service co-ordinator Marge Giles has been helping people with their finances for the past 25 years.

Mrs Giles, whose long service was recognised recently with a special function in Oamaru, said the years had gone quickly.

"It's so challenging. There's always something happening," she said.

Ross Mitchell, who has stepped down as chairman of the organisation, said it was "just amazing" what was achieved in a quiet way in the background in the community by the budgeting advisers, and particularly Mrs Giles.

Another former chairman, Alan McLay, said the organisation had grown and that was a tribute to her tenacity in the early days.
