Youth art exhibition to foster young artists

The positive achievements of young people in the Waitaki district will be the focus of events organised for the end of next month.

That includes setting up a special art gallery in Oamaru for a week-long exhibition of art from people aged between 12 and 25 in the former Avis Communications building in Thames St, which has been loaned by the Oamaru Licensing Trust.

The Waitaki District Youth Council, which operates under the auspices of the Waitaki District Council, will be focusing on arts as part of youth week between May 26 and June 1.

Other events are a wearable arts display on Wednesday, May 28, and a music, drama and dance performance on Friday, May 30.

The council's community development adviser, Louise Day, said the activities would help with the relationship between generations in the community.

"Very often, the focus is on the small minority of young people who attract negative publicity and not enough on the positive achievements of young people,'' she said.

"Positive profiling'' was one of the aims of the youth council.

The art exhibition will have works in a wide range of media and styles - anything that had a creative aspect to it.

Evening events include a grand opening of the week on May 26.

The wearable arts display would have designs of clothing ranging from traditional to avant-garde, as long as they were created by young people.
