Queenstown Lakes district ratepayers are $55,000 out of pocket as the result of traffic-calming measures gone wrong at Cardrona.
About a month ago contractors installed ''thresholds'' at each end of the village to slow traffic.
The thresholds were concrete beams with exposed river stones, which cost the council $50,000 to have made.
Installing them cost another $40,000.
However, on Wednesday, general manager infrastructure and assets Erik Barnes announced that after a ''post-construction audit'' and feedback from the public, the thresholds were being removed.
Motorcyclists and cyclists have expressed dissatisfaction with the devices.
The estimated cost of removing them and reinstating a smooth road surface was $15,000.
In an email to the Otago Daily Times yesterday, a council spokeswoman said the thresholds were reusable in ''an appropriate location''.
