A belief in the event's community ownership

The Wanaka Festival of Colour relies on support from dozens of volunteers. Retired physiotherapist Sue Webb has helped at all four arts festivals. Marjorie Cook discovers why she steps forward.

Q: What are you doing for the Festival of Colour?

A: This is my fourth one. Now I know a lot more about it, I started helping with one or two things before this week. I generally help in the office, 'gofering', sourcing props, helping set up the arts trail, things that an amateur could do. This week, it is all on. I am ushering, doing stuff to help people in the office, giving information to people who want to buy tickets or who are visitors to Wanaka.

Q: What do you love about volunteering?

A: I love it so much I have pencilled out the whole week. I love the theatre and I've got to love other parts of the arts as well. I really believe in this festival. It's got something for everybody. A wonderful feel about it ... The nice thing about it is we, as a community, get to take ownership of it. I love seeing the whole thing come together. And I love to go see things in it, as well.

You see it all developing, like the Crystal Palace going up, and it is magic.

Q: What will you do next?

A: I haven't thought that far ahead. Since I retired, I like to be involved in projects rather than just a set day a week. So I am happy to help with other events in Wanaka. And I am a keen tramper and skier so I am looking forward to that.
