An increase in walkers and cyclists using the Hawea River track is creating a traffic-safety issue along approaches to the narrow Camphill Rd bridge, Rachel Brown told the Wanaka Community Board last week.
Ms Brown is president of the Hawea Community Association and a member of the Upper Clutha Tracks Trust committee.
Icy winter conditions are also affecting the shaded roadway approaches to the bridge, she said.
Safety issues at the bridge have been exacerbated by the rising number of people accessing the Hawea River track from entry points off Camphill Rd - the main traffic route to Hawea Flat.
Cyclists and walkers using the track must cross Camphill Rd at the bridge, with the area also used as a parking spot for cars, she said.
"The track has proved popular beyond all predictions. This has created on-flow issues we need to respond to," she said.
Congestion - from road-crossing pedestrians and cyclists and parked cars - will increase once a proposed kayaking course is laid out on a stretch of river near the bridge, she said.
Discussion between the tracks trust, kayaking club representatives, and a landowner was taking place to see if a specific car park could be created to address one area of concern, she said.
Wanaka Community Board chairman Lyal Cocks said getting the council to install extra road signs at bridge approaches would be another possible solution.
"Everything has accelerated," Ms Brown said, with growing residential population and increased recreational opportunities in the Hawea community on the rise.
