Businesses welcome parking restrictions

Man St Car Park and Night 'n Day operators have welcomed the changes that affect them in the amended parking bylaw, which was adopted by the Queenstown Lakes District Council last week.

QLDC transportation planning manager Denis Mander said staff were working out signage requirements and would implement the changes over the next two months.

Man St Car Park general manager Jaimie Stodler said she was "extremely positive" about the adopted bylaw and commended the council.

Man St on-street parking was cut from P120 to P60, 8am-6pm, Monday-Sunday.

"From a private perspective, we have had a purpose-built car park with over 500 spaces available for two years this May.

This was built under the premise that Queenstown desperately needs adequate parking facilities for its future growth and council was very supportive of this at the time of the build.

"Unrestricted car parking in the central business district costs us all, and when you speak to local business owners and CBD community members it becomes very obvious that moving to short stay and user-pay strategies are the way to go."

Ms Stodler said the CBD needed to address parking issues and must begin with instituting some form of parking controls on inefficient areas.

Another change will see P10 parking at all times on the western side of Camp St between Church St and Searle Ln.

Night `n Day owner Dan Turnbull told the council's parking review panel that customers and suppliers found the existing P15 parking restriction outside the store satisfactory, although a 10-minute parking limit would be an improvement.

Mr Turnbull said he was "absolutely stoked" to hear about the P10 amendment in the adopted bylaw.

"It means customers can come here 24 hours a day and park there, as long as parking spaces are available, and that's what we were after."
