The Skal International Sustainable Development in Tourism awards in South Korea are a chance for Queenstown operators to shine on the world stage, the organisation of industry leaders says.

Expressions of interest for entries in the awards are due by May 31.

The awards will be presented at the opening ceremony of the 73rd Skal World Congress in Seoul and Incheon on October 3.

Entries can be made from both private and public sector companies, as well as non- governmental organisations in the categories of major tourist attractions, tour operators-travel agents, urban accommodation, rural accommodation, transportation, general countryside including alpine tourism, underwater projects, beaches, theme parks, scenic mountains, rivers and lakes, cities-villages, including community and government projects, and educational programmes-media.

Skal International Queenstown president Peter Howe, also Scenic Hotels executive assistant manager, said the benefits of more Wakatipu entries would be the recognition of achievement on the personal and professional level, as well as for "Queenstown Inc" on the international stage of the largest body of tourism and travel professionals in the world.

Skal had almost 40 members across the board of tourism in Queenstown. Founded in 1934, the organisation counted 20,000 members in 500 locations in 90 countries.
