Wanaka councillors considering bids for the mayoralty remained undecided yesterday in the wake of Mr Geddes' surprise announcement he will not seek another term as mayor.
Deputy mayor John S. Wilson and Wanaka Community Board chairman Lyal Cocks told the Otago Daily Times they remained poised to stand against Queenstown councillor Vanessa van Uden.
Ms van Uden is to date the only confirmed candidate.
Both men are mindful of the challenge of being elected as a Wanaka-based mayor, given about two-thirds of the electorate is based in the Wakatipu Basin.
The hurdle of swaying Wakatipu Basin voters was a "serious" consideration for Mr Wilson and Mr Cocks.
Mr Cocks said he was focused on retaining his position as a Wanaka-elected councillor, while Mr Wilson said if he decided to stand for mayor he would not seek re-election as a councillor.
