A woman whose car crashed on Maungawera Hill on State Highway 6, between Wanaka and Lake Hawea, on Friday night will appear in court next month on multiple charges.
When the 32-year-old woman's car rolled she was helped from the vehicle by motorists about 7pm, then fled into nearby paddocks.
Police later found her in pine trees about 400m from the crash site. Constable Mike Johnston said the uninjured woman recorded a breath-alcohol reading of 877mcg, more than double the legal limit.
She was charged with failing to accompany, resisting arrest, careless driving and driving with an excess breath-alcohol level. She will appear in the Queenstown District Court on October 3.
• A GPS device played a part in a three-vehicle crash on Cardrona Valley Rd near Wanaka just after 5pm on Saturday, police said.
Constable Greg Nolet said a Russian tourist, confused by directions from his navigation unit, stopped in the middle of the road.
Two vehicles had been travelling behind him and the driver of the back car hit the other vehicle, which then crashed into the back of the confused tourist's stationary vehicle. There were no injuries, but the driver of the rearmost car received an infringement notice.
