A collision on Malaghans Rd appears to have caused one vehicle to crash into an electricity pole, which cut power to parts of Arrowtown and Coronet Peak yesterday morning.

A 27-year-old Queenstown man was driving alone in a ute with The Remarkables skifield insignia, towards the resort on Malaghans Rd, a few hundred metres past the turn-off to Alan Reids Rd, about 7am.

Queenstown police said it seemed the ute crossed the centre line and collided with a Nissan Pulsar, driven by a 29-year-old Queenstown woman.

The ute continued on and knocked a pole supporting heavy-duty 33,000kV and 11,000kV electricity lines out of the ground.

The woman, who was the sole occupant of the Pulsar, complained of a sore chest and both drivers were treated for minor injuries by St John Wakatipu ambulance officers. Arrowtown and Frankton volunteer fire brigades attended the accident.

The Nissan was removed but the ute remained in the ditch and traffic was restricted to one lane until after 11am, by which time Delta staff had reinstalled the pole and restored power.

Police said inquiries were continuing and no arrests had been made.
