Four Wakatipu artists are profiled in a new book of New Zealand contemporary talents.

The artists will attend the public launch of the book, New Zealand Gallery, at Artbay Gallery in Queenstown tomorrow.

Rachael Errington, Simon Morrison-Deaker, John Shewry and Geoff Williams will sign copies of the book between noon and 2pm at the gallery, which is in the Mountaineer building.

The artists will also take the opportunity to exhibit some of their latest pieces.

Works of 62 new and established New Zealand artists were compiled for the book by Denis Robinson, a designer, art director and gallery manager.

Mr Robinson told the Queenstown Times he shortlisted the 62 profiles in the book from more than 300 artists recommended to him by more than 140 gallery owners and by word of mouth in the art trade.

He then left his Hibiscus Coast home and toured New Zealand to research which work was most popular, both in a local and national context.

"I was based in Queenstown in February [and] March, found the artists and used the same criteria for everyone else," Mr Robinson said.

Those featured were people with ideas, distinctive style and competent technique, he said.
