Fire, rural issues raised

Fire risks to residences in rural areas were recognised, and ways of dealing with the huge amount of information collected about issues in rural planning were discussed, at a Queenstown Lakes District Council subcommittee meeting last month.

At the strategy committee meeting on July 27, Cr Leigh Overton said there was no mention of fire risks in the council's "Planning in our Rural Areas".

Mr Overton said there were "only six serious farms in the Wakatipu" with remaining rural land unrazed.

"Sooner or later, we're going to lose some houses," he said.

Guidelines needed to be established in the planning report, which continued to be developed by council staff.

Policy and planning general manager Philip Pannett said there were some risk issues in subdivisions going into existing vegetation.

Committee chairwoman Gillian Macleod said the council needed to have an understanding of what the cumulative effects were as urban densities had crept up.

A total of 56 submissions were received by the council, not including real estate agent survey responses, between March 26 and June 18 this year.

It was likely the council would organise group discussions with rural residents, farmers and rural business owners.
