Fox monument tidy-up next week

Nomad Safaris will take volunteers to clean around the William Fox monument in Arrowtown on Wednesday as part of Conservation Week.

The Queenstown 4WD tour operator started cleaning the memorial when scrub hid it from view about five years ago. More worked was needed around it this year, driver-guide Fran O'Connor said this week.

Arrowtown was originally named Foxes after William Fox, a Californian gold miner.

"Being the 150th anniversary of goldmining coming to the area, it is a very good project to take part of next Wednesday afternoon," Ms O'Connor said.

Transport will leave Nomad Safaris on the corner of Industrial Pl and Gorge Rd at 1.30pm and return about 5pm, or volunteers can meet the group at the Chinese Settlement, or on the Arrow River. Volunteers are asked to bring gloves, loppers and small saws if they have them.

To take take part, phone Nomad Safaris on (03) 442-6699.
