How to cross a river with a rope and a milk container was just one of the skills passed on to a group of new hunting guides at a week-long course based at Glen Dene Station, Lake Hawea, this week.

The New Zealand Professional Hunting Guides Association course covered 23 subjects, from river crossing and firearms safety to skinning and butchery.

Nelson fishing guide Zane Mirfin is pictured being tutored on crossing the Hawea River by instructor Rob Plim, of Lake Hawea.
