Hopes for a final

Organisers of the Freeski New Zealand Open hope to hold the finals of the big mountain event at The Remarkables skifield today, weather permitting.

The event is classified as a 3-star Freeride World Tour qualifying event and has attracted skiers hoping to make the tour.

The big mountain qualifying rounds were held on Monday at The Remarkables Shadow Basin, where riders were judged on overall impression with a specific focus on line choice, control, air, style, fluidity and technique.

Tone Jersin Ansnes (Norway) was the top female qualifier and New Zealand's Cam McDermid topped the men's results.

Of the 33 male competitors, the top 15 qualifiers progressed to the finals to be joined by seven pre-qualified skiers. New Zealand men claimed nine of the top 15 qualifying spots, including 17-year-old Aucklander Ryan Read, who qualified in second place, and Hawea Flat teenager Hank Bilous (15), who finished fourth.

The women's start list comprised 15 skiers with the top seven through to the finals - including Alex Brook, of Christchurch, who claimed third place. They will be joined by three pre-qualified female competitors.
