About 25 volunteers from Novotel Queenstown Lakeside, Hotel St Moritz, Mercure Resort and Sofitel rolled up their sleeves to collect and take away rubbish from the site and remove wilding conifers, lupins, broom and any other noxious weeds in the area.
The work was part of Accor Hotels' efforts for International Earth Day and this year had a special emphasis on water.
All guests were given a complimentary bottle of Waiwera Water, with a reminder about the importance of the resource, and hotel staff and guests were invited to One Mile Creek to help clean up the local environment.
Novotel general manager Jim Moore said the activity was good for both staff and guests as it built awareness of important environmental issues.
Also, all Accor Hotels had committed to trying to save up to 10% in water, electricity and gas over the next few years based on their 2008 usage.
"These initiatives are ongoing commitments."
Accor was listed in the Top 100 International Companies for its environmentally friendly policies.
Many of its hotels are going through Green Globe certification and all of the hotels follow a worldwide charter for sustainable development and environmental management.
The charter had several initiatives and all hotels agreed on planned activities, which increased each year, Mr Moore said.
"Our environmental activities coincide with our other sustainable goals such as helping within the community and our work with such organisations as Cure Kids in NZ, and supporting such events as World Aids Day and programmes to reduce sex tourism as well as promote fair trade."
