The winning piece in Treble Cone's 2011 On Ice Sculpture competition was a sculpture of a hook. Sculptors are sought for the 2012 competition at the end of next month, with a $1600 cash prize on offer for the winner. Ten finalists will have from 9am on June 30 to 2pm on July 1 to transform a block of ice into a winter masterpiece, with the work to remain on display around the ski area's plaza and base building throughout the July school holidays.

Carvings can be made from pre-prepared designs or freehand, with toolkits containing everything from hand chisels, saws and axes to battery drills and chainsaws. Sculptures are judged on creative artistry, relevance to the alpine surroundings and how well they involve the audience, with each piece required to incorporate an empty bottle of Zumwohl schnapps.

The competition is open to everyone, with teams permitted. Entrants should contact Treble Cone with their expressions of interest. A $100 deposit is required to hold a block of ice, to be refunded on the first day of the competition. Judging will take place on July 1, with the winner announced the following day.
