After a "shaky" start for winter job-hunters, Queenstown's employment market is back to its seasonal self, a Queenstown job agency says.

No snow and few visitors had meant few jobs.

However, once the snow started, the winter was a busy one for hiring, managing director of The Job Agency in Queenstown, Chris Major, said.

"When there was no snow, there was nobody coming in with jobs," Mr Major said.

"It has been busier for us this winter than last winter, which is more just a reflection that we have had more clients, rather than a reflection of the economy."

Employers were now looking to sign permanent placements, he said.

"That's coming through as a lot of the candidates have left town recently who will need to be replaced, so we have a lot of people with a need to find staff in these areas."

In particular, Queenstown employers were in need of chefs, operations managers and mechanics, he said.

He expected temporary job applications would pick up over the next few weeks and last until February.

"We get a big influx of people in for the summer season, which is when we get 40 to 50 registrations a day," Mr Major said.

Many roles would be in events. Previous occasions such as the Trenz tourism conference and international cricket matches had employed 100 and 50 workers respectively, he said.
