Karting, 10-pin, and gym centre gains consent

A karting facility, 10-pin bowling centre and a new gym will be established at Remarkables Park, north of Hawthorne Dr, after resource consent was granted (subject to conditions) on a non-notified basis.

The Willow Place Family Trust applied for land use consent to establish and operate the commercial recreation activities in the Remarkables Park Special Zone, on pastoral land directly south of Queenstown Airport.

Consent was sought to establish the karting, bowling and gym facilities in one building, with a gross floor area of 4000sq m.

A total of 44 car parks would be provided for, accessed via a new right of way off the Eastern Access Rd.

Up to 10 karts would run at any one time, operating predominantly between noon and 10pm.

The bowling alley would house between eight and 10 lanes, allowing up to 48 people to play at any given time, operating between 10am and 10pm.

The gym would be located above the bowling alley on a mezzanine floor. The application said up to 8-10 patrons were expected to be on site at any given time during operating hours, between 6am and 10pm.

Up to 13,166cu m of earthworks were proposed over an area of 30,787sq m, to create the car-parking areas, a level building platform and landscaping.

Independent commissioner Jane Sinclair said adverse effects of earthworks would be mitigated through the construction of ''hard surfacing'', for example, road, car-parking areas and buildings.

''Should buildings not be constructed following excavation, then these areas shall be grassed within four weeks of works being undertaken. A condition of consent is recommended to ensure this occurs.''
